Mighty Mystic

Mighty Mystic is considered as one of the leaders in the U.S. Reggae scene and labeled by many as one of the more prolific artists to develop outside of Jamaica. He has gripped the scene with ferocious conviction and an uncanny ambition worthy to be mentioned among the greats. He has gone from being a fan of reggae music to being a contributor to the art. Mighty Mystic came on the scene in 2006 after scoring his first international hit with the song “Riding on the Clouds.” However, it wasn’t until the release of his first album “Wake up the World” (2010) that he became a household name. “Wake up the World” boasted several standouts, such as “Revolution,” “Riding on the Clouds,” “Original Love,” and “Slipped Away” with appearances from reggae icon Shaggy and roots rocker Lutan Fyah. Mystic continues to wake up the world with his high energy, message driven brand of reggae music which he emphatically calls “HARD ROOTS.” It is this unique spin on classic reggae blended with Hip Hop & Rock that has catapulted him to the forefront of today’s Reggae Revival. Mighty Mystic is also the younger brother of current Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness. When asked, does being the brother of Prime Minister Holness have any impact on your music? Mystic simply says “Andrew has a job to do and so do I, impact or not we both have our own mission to complete”.

THE EARLY YEARS

Mighty Mystic was born Kevin Mark Holness in the farming community of Goshen, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica to parents Morris & Sonia Holness. As a child, Kevin showed early interest in his native island’s music. It was common to hear him singing the latest tunes while imitating the actions of popular reggae artists. When Kevin was 10, the family relocated to Boston, MA in search of a new life. Though oceans apart Kevin never lost the passion for his beloved reggae music. Kevin’s brother Stephen was already making a name for himself in the local Hip Hop scene as an up and coming rapper. This intrigued young Kevin and it wouldn’t be long till he was bitten by the music bug. Soon he would be at every school talent show, every house party, every park showcase, every rap battle, every studio doing features, on every show as the opening act and before you knew it young Kevin had the ears of his City. It was becoming clear that this early buzz might be a real thing so he decided it was time for a musical name. He chose Mystic as it was his father’s nick name as a kid and also the area Kevin was living in at the time, but moreover it was a reflection of the type of music he was into and doing. As Mystic arrived so would a new level of determination and passion. By the time he was 19, he had several songs as well as remixes produced by DJ Roy Barboza being played on Boston’s #1 commercial radio station JAMN 94.5. The buzz would ignite like a wildfire and spread nationally. Soon the big boys like Funk Master Flex in NY was rocking MM, DJ Khaled in Miami and the Baka Boys in LA to name a few. And in a blink of an eye the foundation for a “Mighty” future was set.

MYSTIC OF TODAY

Mighty Mystic has turned himself into one of the more sought after U.S. based Reggae artists on today’s scene. His brand of “HARD ROOTS” with his high energy stage performance has been a magnet for the young enthusiastic reggae fan base. He has managed to hold firm to his Jamaican roots while adding elements of Hip Hop & Rock giving Mystic a more unique sound. Mystic has released 3 albums which all debuted in the top 10 on iTunes and Billboard reggae charts (Wake up the World 2010, Concrete World 2014, and The Art of Balance 2016). As well as a dozen bona fide single hits such Riding on the Clouds, Revolution, Concrete World, Something Bout Mary, Happy and Cali Green which was featured on VP Records “Hi Grade Ganja Anthems 4” compilation (2016). He has done over 20 national tours and several international tours. Mystic has toured and/or shared the stage with Ziggy Marley, Steel Pulse, Damian Marley, Buju Banton, Stephen Marley, Shaggy, SOJA, Toots and the Maytals, Collie Buddz, Sean Paul, Lee Scratch Perry, Barrington Levy, The Wailers, John Brownʼs Body, Luciano, Third World, Freddie McGregor, Capleton, Badfish, the Dirty Heads and the list goes on and on and on… Mystic’s high energy stage performance is a sight to see as was evident at Jamaica’s premiere reggae festival Rebel Salute 2018 and America’s longest running festival Reggae on the River 2017. He has guest appeared on massive TV networks such as NBC TV, FOX TV, ABC TV and CBS TV. For many, this would be a summary of a long career, but for Mighty Mystic this is still just the beginning. Look out for a February 1st 2019 release of his 4th studio album titled “Enter the Mystic” and a 20+ city tour to support this venture via VP Records/VPAL.
